Patented boards solve a host of decking problems

The season to enjoy patio parties, sunbathing by the lake, and boating is short to begin with; using that precious time on maintaining, repairing or replacing dock and deck boards can make it even shorter.

Most cottagers and homeowners want a product that doesn’t require a lot of TLC, is durable, is suitable for harsh climates, has UV protection, and is resistant to stain, scratches, moisture, mould and mildew.

Meanwhile, builders want all these traits in a board, as well as the ability to fit larger spans – all the way up to 32-inches on centre – with more stability.

TIVA owner Terry Fangrad and his team took all these considerations into account when developing their patented PVC TIVADOK and TIVADEK boards, which meet these requirements and more. The TIVADOK board even has an aluminum core for added stability.

A builder with 35-plus years in the industry, as well as experience as a supplier, Terry had a clear vision when partnering with his daughter Megan Fangrad, the company’s vice president, on the evolution of dock and deck boards.

“We knew that low maintenance was something people wanted for their cottage and dock space and commercial docks, but there wasn’t a product yet that was solving the span issue,” explains Megan. “Terry always says, ‘we’re in the solution business.’ So, we’ve always focused on innovation; not being a ‘me-too brand,’ but really trying to solve problems and be innovative.”

Industry firsts
One of those innovations is the first all-black PVC board available on the market, says Megan. She explains that historically, companies were leery of going with such a strong tone due to potential fade issues. However, the ASA technology in TIVA’s capstock prevents these fade issues, and they stand by it with an extensive warranty.

“It’s pretty bold,” she says. “We were really confident in bringing out a black board with our 50-year fade and stain warranty.”

As well, the TIVADEK board features dual grain technology. Each side of the board is embossed with a different grain pattern, allowing installers and homeowners to decide on-site which looks best in a given situation. This reversible board is another industry first.

“We’re always looking to bring new and exciting products to the industry and things that people really want,” says Megan.
