Everyone needs a hand sometimes: more so as we age.
Though a partner or loved one is often the primary caregiver, there are moments when an experienced personal support worker (PSW) is necessary.
For some families, this happens at special events like weddings or other celebrations, says Kandis Occhiuzzi of Kandis Kares PSW Services.
One family recently contracted Kandis to come to a wedding and provide support for the bride’s grandparents. Cassandra, the mother of the bride, explained that her father is usually her mother’s caregiver.
“Kandis put my mind at ease,” says Cassandra. “She knew that it was very important to me that my parents be able to attend the wedding and enjoy themselves, and that my mom would be safe and well taken care of … She worked with my dad to adjust the timing of her schedule and went out of her way to try and make sure my parents were comfortable and could take part in any activity they wanted.”
Having a professional there to carry the load for the wedding weekend made it all the more enjoyable for all involved.
“My dad was still there, but Kandis was able to seamlessly take on some of the caregiver role,” says Cassandra. “It really put his mind at ease. My mother enjoyed getting to know Kandis, and she seemed to feel very comfortable and at home with her.”
A gentle touch
PSW support isn’t just limited to special events. With 20 years of providing high quality care and PSW services throughout the Muskoka region and beyond, Kandis is adept at handling a variety of personalities and needs in a wide range of settings.
Her compassionate care and communication abilities have earned her the affectionate nickname of the “senior whisperer” in some circles.
This was immediately evident to Scott and Cathy upon Kandis’ first meet-and-greet with their dad, where she was able to get the not-so-willing father to have a much-needed shower.
“We only wish we would have found Kandis sooner,” says Cathy. “We have dealt with several private caregivers over the years and Kandis is truly a standout individual.”
Using her naturally vibrant sense of humour matched with a calm demeanour, Kandis engages with her clients and provides reassurance to their loved ones.
“She fit right in with my humorous, fun, loving family,” recalls Cassandra. “There were comments made by several family members that they would like to adopt her into our clan. It really made a difference having her there.”
