Rebates make upgrading a snap

If your air conditioner is struggling to keep up this summer—making noise, failing to cool your home, or driving up your energy bill—it might be nearing the end of its lifespan. Most traditional AC units last between 10 and 15 years, says Dan LeBlanc, owner of Simcoe Muskoka Home Comfort (SMHC). Summer is typically when older systems start to fail.

“If your unit is making unusual sounds, and your electricity bills are climbing, it’s likely time to look at replacement options,” says Dan.

Many homeowners are now turning to alternatives that last longer, reduce monthly costs, and cut emissions. Dan points to two proven options: air source heat pumps and geothermal systems.

Both technologies work by moving heat instead of generating it. That means less energy consumption and a lower carbon footprint. “They’re efficient because they transfer heat rather than burn fuel,” Dan explains.

Air source heat pumps draw heat from the outdoor air, while geothermal systems rely on the consistent temperature below the ground for heating and cooling. Geothermal units are especially efficient in extreme temperatures and use less energy than conventional systems.

Beyond energy savings, these systems offer year-round comfort—cooling in the summer and heating in the winter. “You’re simplifying your HVAC setup while improving performance across all seasons,” Dan adds.

Geothermal systems do have a higher upfront cost, but they also come with longer lifespans and minimal maintenance needs. “The underground loop can last for decades, and once it’s in place, you’ll see the return in lower energy use and fewer service calls.”

To help with the cost, Ontario offers rebate programs that significantly reduce the initial investment. The new Home Renovation Savings (HRS) Program provides up to $7,500 in rebates for air source heat pumps and up to $12,000 for geothermal systems.

While SMHC is known for its work with heat pumps and geothermal systems, the company also offers full-service HVAC solutions—including high-efficiency furnaces, boilers, fireplaces, ductless systems, and ductwork installation. “We’re equipped for everything from new construction to replacements and service calls,” says Dan. “Whether you need a conventional setup or want to explore modern alternatives, we can help.”

Dan emphasizes the importance of working with experienced professionals to install these systems. SMHC is certified by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI) and recognized as a “Heat Pump Champion”—a designation given to only a few contractors in the province.

With a 50-person workforce and fully equipped 24/7 service fleet, SMHC covers Muskoka, Simcoe County, Tiny Township, and the Collingwood area. “We’re ready to help anytime you need us,” Dan says. “From installation to emergency service, we’ve got you covered.”
