Jerry Kowalski has been running his renovation business for just over 20 years, but the desire to do the work goes back a lot further than that.
Jerry comes from a family of carpenters that is several generations deep on his mom’s side. Originally from Poland, Jerry became a computer technician but eventually found himself going back to his roots.
The lure of construction runs in the family: two of his uncles started as cooks but went into construction because they loved it.
Jerry Home Renovation is a family business, with Jerry’s son Wojtek and son-in-law Graeme joining the team. Graeme moved from Scotland to join the family and the dream – learning the trade directly from Jerry and sharing in the passion for their work.
They are expanding their service area as they make the move to Muskoka.
“We have that in our blood,” he says. “My son tried a couple of things, but now he is with me doing construction. We really, really enjoy doing the work.”

This was the case recently where a renovation called for a new window. When the team took out the old window, they found a wall that was crumbling at the touch. Sure enough, they have now built a new wall that is better suited to the environment.
“The old wall wasn’t properly sealed and ventilated,” recalls Jerry. “It was holding moisture which eventually rotted out the wood. Thankfully we found out before it became worse.”
At the same property, they have just begun replacing three balconies attached to the main cottage. In another project, they needed to rebuild a deck, gazebo, and then renovate a bunkie.
“You could see the gazebo tilting when we arrived,” says Wojtek. “We needed to get a solid concrete foundation to stabilize the deck and gazebo posts before completing the job. On the bunkie, we replaced worn wood, put on a new roof, and refreshed the siding.”
