From cozy chalets to rustic Muskoka cottages, a cedar roof has an unmistakable charm. Shakes and shingles can add to the ambiance of any architectural style and will last a lifetime – that is if they are properly maintained.
Chad Gilchrist, owner of Roll-On Painting and MuskokaSoftwash.com, services properties across Muskoka, Simcoe County and Georgian Bay, many of which have cedar roofs.
“If your roof has a carpet of green moss or discolourations from mould and lichen growth, you are cutting the lifespan of your roof,” says Chad. “That organic growth is feeding on your cedar, and causing it to remain wet. Always remember, prolonged wetness equals rot.”
Think of your roof as an investment, he adds. Take care of it, and it will last for decades.

A soft solution
Traditionally, pressure washers have been used to blast pollen, dirt and debris from hard-to-clean surfaces like the exterior of your home and roof, but Chad notes that’s not always the best solution.
“Power washing is great for concrete, interlock and stone patios, especially when combined with the right water temperature and pressure. But when used on wood, it can remove any coating protecting its surface.”
Before painting, Chad and his team often use power washing to remove peeling stain and paint from cedar shingles, wooden siding, and decks before they’re recoated.
If you’re not looking to remove your paint or stain, though, Chad suggests using a gentler option: soft-washing your exterior.
The soft wash process uses a solution of water, a diluted cleaning solution, and a surfactant which is gently sprayed on the exterior surfaces. Within 10 to 15 minutes, this coating kills the organic material clinging to the surface, removes stains and brightens wood. Once the solution is rinsed off, your exterior’s original lustre is restored.
While the solution includes diluted bleach, it won’t damage or fade your surfaces, nor will it harm your surrounding gardens and greenery. By thoroughly watering the surrounding foliage before, during and after applying the soft wash solution, it locks out the solution like a saturated sponge.
Soft-washing is popular for cedar shake restoration, but it is also ideal for almost every surface of your cottage’s exterior, from siding and trim to decks and fences.

A fresh coat
Once your surfaces are clean, protecting them with the right stain, paint or coating is critical to locking out moisture, mould and mildew.
Roll-On Painting has long been a favourite among locals, seasonal residents and contractors who lean on Chad and his team to paint exteriors and interiors with precision.
Cutting edge approachAt their off-site shop, his team paints cabinetry and furniture, and pre-treats trim and siding using the latest equipment, sourced from across the globe.
In addition to cutting-edge spray booths for kitchen cabinetry, Chad has also purchased a 360-degree finishing machine for pre-treating siding, trim and cedar shakes on all sides.
“We’re always looking for ways to make our work better and last longer,” says Chad.
For Chad, this approach has become a way of life, leading him to pursue his Red Seal painting designation.
Like a Michelin Star, a Red Seal designation in painting is a nationally recognized certification that signifies a high level of competency in the trade. Painters achieve this designation by completing a recognized apprenticeship program and passing a rigorous certification exam.
“Once complete, I’ll be the only Red Seal painter in our region,” says Chad. For him, this accreditation is about more than rank: it’s about encouraging others in the industry. “I want to improve the industry and lead others to do the same.”
Perfect timing
Perfect timing Time your maintenance to boost your property’s longevity
Every year
Wash your cedar shakes. By having them washed every year, you will keep your shakes healthy and looking great. Its also much more cost effective than trying to revive or replace them prematurely.
Every five years
Treat your cedar shakes with a roof coating which will seal in the colour and guard against any damage.
As needed
While Chad suggests repainting your home’s exterior finishes and high-traffic interior spaces every two to four years, every home’s needs are unique. South and west-facing walls need to be repainted more often, as do kitchens, great rooms, and front foyers where your families spend the most time. Consider repainting these areas every year or two as a great way to keep them healthy and looking fresh.
When scheduling your next wash or paint project, Chad advises having the work done while you’re away. To stay on top of the maintenance, sign up for an annual or bi-annual service subscription, to take the worry out of upkeep.
“We’ll take care of everything, so you can walk into your home or cottage and simply enjoy.”
