Clean, potable water is a necessity for everyone, but it can be a challenge in rural homes and cottages that draw lake or well water.
The solution usually involves installing a water filtration system to remove harmful elements before the water runs through the taps. To ensure that you’re getting the right fit for your needs, and that the system is installed correctly, it’s vital to call an expert.
“Not every property has the same needs,” explains Eric Dube of Water Depot. “It’s important to start with an assessment and to test the water source before planning what system to use.”
Often homeowners or property owners are unaware of what is needed. So, they hire a plumber to install a UV system or other filtration and think the job is done.

Eric and Nicole Blanchet own Water Depot locations in Bracebridge, Barrie and Wasaga Beach. Their team includes water filtration experts with training, certification, and over 30 years of experience.
They’re often called in to solve the problems others can’t. “We often see water that is still yellow or brown or doesn’t taste right,” says Eric. “It’s usually because either the wrong system is in place, or they need more specific treatments.”
Once a proper water quality test is done and the assessment is made, then Eric can recommend the appropriate treatment system for the issues in this specific water supply.
Yellow water is a common issue. It is caused by tannins, which are decomposed organic materials, and sediments from lake beds. A tannin filter helps provide clean, safe water.
Microorganisms and pathogens, on the other hand, can be treated through UV light filters. Other equipment is needed to filter iron-rich water.
The sequence matters too. “Tannin and iron filters need to be placed before the UV light, or you can have issues with sediment building up,” says Eric. “Knowing the right order is just as important as knowing what filters and treatments are needed.”
Regular maintenance
Once a treatment system is in place, it’s a good idea to get on a Water Depot maintenance schedule. Eric and his team will have a look and make sure everything is working as it should be to keep clean, good tasting water throughout your home or cottage.
“We can provide in-home service and keep track of when bulbs and filters need replacing, so you don’t need to,” says Eric. “It’s part and parcel of being the water treatment experts.”
